University of Nottingham English Course Film
What if we told you English isn’t what you think it is? That was the challenge when the University of Nottingham asked us to create a film promoting their English course. Too often, English is seen as dry, old-fashioned, or tied up with clichés about dusty tomes and shushing librarians. Our task was to flip that perception on its head. For Simply Thrilled, it was a brilliant example of how creative video production in the Midlands can give a fresh take on a classic subject.
We started with contrast. The film opened with a tongue-in-cheek black-and-white sequence – typewriters clacking, old-school title cards, and a pastiche of the kind of imagery you’d expect if English really were all about the past. Then, in a sharp twist, we flipped the switch into full colour and energy.
The rest of the film was a rapid-fire, kinetic montage which captured the breadth and dynamism of studying English today. From literature and film to cultural studies and creative writing, every corner of the course came alive on screen. The pace was bold and surprising – the exact opposite of the stereotype.
To unify the film, we built each scene around a rallying call. No matter where the action went, it ended with the same simple truth: “This is English.” That phrase gave the campaign both clarity and punch, driving home the message that the subject is vibrant, relevant, and bursting with possibilities.
